My copy turned up yesterday and, based on an initial glance, I wish it was nearer the top of my list of books to read ;-) (Then again, those flights to San Francisco are very long!)

AFAIK Jonathan is working on it. But for more information you should ask Jonathan…

Honestly, I have no idea why Oracle does that. Also in my opinion it makes no sense.

Simply put it is correct to say that the parent is the SQL text and the child the execution plan. Of course, both the parent and the child contains much more information.

Excellent book!! I have been reading it since I got it last week. I totally agree with Hans’ comment about it being up there with Kyte, Lewis and Millsap…that being said, where is part 2 of the CBO stuff Jonathan??
Anyway, one thing I was confused about: on page 13 you say “The selectivity is a value between 0 and 1 representing the fraction of rows returned by an operation”. However, on page 30, you show an example where the calculated selectivity is 1.088989. Did I miss something because 1.09 is higher than 1 right?
I was also a bit confused about the difference between parent and child cursors in the related discussion in chapter 2. Is the parent the original SQL text from the query and the child is the resulting explain plan? It didn’t seem to be clearly stated in the text, but then I may have missed it.
I have recommended this book to all of my colleagues already. Thanks soooo much!

Congratulations. I returned from a business trip last night, and my copy had arrived. Already skimmed once, this book is designated for the ‘important reference works’ bookshelf.

Once I have read it (several times – there is a lot in there) it will find it’s home is right next to Tom Kyte’s, Cary Millsap’s and Jonathan Lewis’ books where I immediately access it.
